MMSU’s SORGHUM WINS BEST OF SHOW AWARD
Mariano Marcos State University’s sweet sorghum food products were adjudged the TechForum 2010’s BEST IN SHOW AWARDEE.
PhP 30,000 in cash and a trophy recognizing the Batac City, Ilocos Norte state university’s sorghum products as the most promising technology from among the exhibitors in the Technology Showcase.
MMSU’s sorghum product line-up included :
Sweet Sorghum Vinegar
A quality product obtained from superior-quality sorghum varieties. It is made up of 100% extracted juice from sweet sorghum stalk that undergoes the natural process of fermentation with the aid of microorganisms. Vinegar is fermented for 1-6 months. It has no preservatives or chemicals added with 4-6% acidity.
Sweet Sorghum Wine
An alcoholic beverage made of fermented juice extracted from sweet sorghum stalk. Freshly extracted juice is pasteurized, then added with 5% yeast per liter. It undergoes the natural fermentation process, ensuring a 100% preservative or chemical-free type of wine. Bottled and sealed to preserve its unique taste.
Sweet Sorghum Syrup/Jaggery
A type of sweetener obtained from juice extracts of sweet sorghum stalk. Syrup is made by boiling the juice until thick consistency is attained. While the jiggery is produced when cooking is extended after syrup is produced. This is a traditional, unrefined, non-centrifugal type of sugar made for direct consumption. It contains 77% total soluble solids, 70.30 total reducing sugars, 160 calcium, 1.65% protein, 3.69% ash, 11mg/100g sodium, and 1810mg/100g potassium.
Sweet Sorghum Flour
A product obtained from the grains of sweet sorghum. It is made by sundrying or oven-dying the grains then grinding it into very fine particles. The sweet sorghum flour is a perfect ingredient for noodles, polvoron, cakes, bread, cookies, and other baked products.
A panel of three judges selected the Best of Show Awardee based on the following criteria : Wide in Scope and Applicability – 25%; Sustainability – 25%; Ease of Adoption – 25%; and Overall Presentation – 25%.
The judges were DOST Undersecretary Fortunato T. dela Peña; top Filipino industrialist Cecilio K. Pedro, president of Lamoiyan Corp.; and productivity and management consultant Antonio M. Lucindo, president of Performance Solutions Advocates Inc. The panel recognized MMSU for “having the most promising technology, with the strongest potential to emerge from its pre-commercialization stage into a viable business venture.”
TRC has an ongoing partnership agreement with MMSU. The sorghum products are among the agri-based technology outputs of MMSU that are seeking market access through TRC. TEKNOBIZ IDEA CHALLENGE NETS BIG IDEAS
Do you have an innovative technology-based business idea that has not yet been introduced anywhere in the country?
Does it have the potential for market acceptability both to the Philippines and foreign markets?
These two questions were more than amply answered at the recently-held TechForum 2010. The “exclusively-for-students” TeknoBiz Idea Challenge competitions were big winners in this year’s idea harvest.
SLU-Baguio is winner in Regular Category
The Regular Category netted 13 entries from all over the country. St. Louis University-Baguio City’s Team Sugar Catalyst won with their entry, “Efficiency of Heterogeneous Sugar-Catalyst from Paper & Rice-Straw as catalyst in Ethyl Ester Production”.
Entries on Renewable Energy, Food Processing, Organic, Herbal, and ICT products and services were among those received from schools all over the Philippines. A cash prize of PhP 30,000 and a trophy were awarded to SLU-Baguio.
2nd placer and winner of a PhP 20,000 cash prize was the “Collaborative Decision
Support System”, an entry submitted by the CDLL Team from De La Salle University (DLSU) – Manila.
Winner of a PhP 10,000 cash prize and the 3rd place slot was the “Indian Mango Leather Production” project of the Masbate-based Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa, Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture & Technology (DEBESMSCAT).
Dir. Edgar I. Garcia of DOST’s Technology Application & Promotion Institute (TAPI), Ms. Crispina B. Almonte of the University of the Philippines’ Institute of Small Scale Industries (UP-ISSI) and Dr. Rosalinda M. Lacsamana, Group Manager of TRC’s Technology Information & Livelihood Dissemination Services Group (TLIDSG) were the judges in the Regular Category.
DLSU-Manila sweeps Mobile Tech Category
GlobeLabs, an innovation-driven group within Globe Telecom Inc., sponsored the special Mobile Technology Category of the TBIC. With cash prizes, trophies, training by GlobeLabs, and a one-year lease award at the DOST-PEZA Open TBI facility in UP-Diliman at stake, this much-awaited contest drew much interest.
Entries to the Mobile Tech category were any mobile application using or connecting to any Globe service (SMS, MMS, GPRS or 3G/HSDPA) and falling into any of the product or service types such as Games, Messaging, Entertainment, Social Networking, Productivity or Developmental.
All the winners were from De La Salle University – Manila : the HARIMAO Team with their SIOMAO Gaming Integrated via SMS entry (3rd); the (2nd) TECKNOWLEDGEY Team with their CLINICK Appointments Queuing System application; and the MOWACHI Team was the big winner with their child-focused mobile educational workbook application. Cash prizes were PhP 60,000 for 1st, PhP 30,000 for 2nd and PhP 15,000 for the 3rd placer.
The panel of judges was composed of Romeo D. De Villa, CUA and head, iCenter Evangelist of GlobeLabs and iCenter senior specialist Marie Tess C. Cruz, and productivity and management consultant Antonio M. Lucindo, president of Performance Solutions Advocates Inc. representing TRC.
